Dream Lands
For my little love, who resists bedtime but has the most wonderful sleeps.

It was like any other night when Elle climbed into bed. Her friends were there: Pigu, Lambie, and Miffy, all in a row on the pillow. Elle laid down her head. Mama pulled up the blanket and turned out the lights.

But on this night something special happened. Pigu's antlers started to glow. Before Elle could sit up, the bed turned to a wooden sled beneath them, and her room transformed into a wintery wonderland. Whoosh, out they glided, onto a sparkling tundra under a warm pink-and-gold midnight sun that never, ever set.

Penguins waddled close to say hello, snow foxes hopped and tumbled around playing, and icebergs as big as houses floated past. Elle and Pigu had so much fun dancing and playing and making new friends. They played in the snow and they skipped across icebergs all night long.

And then suddenly it was morning. Elle opened her eyes and Pigu was still sitting there on her pillow. Her room was just her room again. The snow had gone. Her bed was just a bed. And everything looked the same as always.

The next evening Elle was more eager than usual to get into bed. She got into her pyjamas quickly. And there, all in a row on the pillow, were Pigu, Lambie, and Miffy.

Lambie sat up and the bedroom floor melted into a quiet stream. Elle found herself in a little wooden boat with Lambie sat at the bow. They were drifting down a stream, under a canopy of forest trees, past kererū calling and kākā chattering and kōkako singing low in the green, green bush.

They floated into a dark, glowing cave where stalagmites stood like sleepy giants. The water shone blue below them. Overhead, thousands of tiny glowworms twinkled like a galaxy of stars up in the sky. And they watched them while they had a picnic of tea and scones in their little boat.

But just as Elle went to have her next sip of tea, it was morning again. Lambie was still there on the pillow. And Elle's bedroom looked like it had done any other morning. There was no stream, no cave, and no glowworms.

The next evening, Mama and Dada were surprised to find Elle had already tucked herself in bed without them asking. And Pigu, Lambie, and Miffy were all in a row on the pillow next to her.

This time when the lights went out, Miffy got up and hopped up out of bed and along a sandy path. Elle followed her into a wonderland where mushroom houses dotted the hills and small elves waved from their doorways. Windmills turned slowly, slowly, far off in the breeze.

Elle and Miffy came to rest in a field, but soon up sprang hundreds and hundreds of giant tulip bulbs, blooming all at once as far as the eye could see, creating a beautiful technicolour world with all the colours of the rainbow.

And then it was morning again. And while Elle knew that it was going to be a wonderful day, she was already looking forward to climbing into bed and drifting off into another wonderful adventure with her furry friends.
